Great Smoky Mountains National Park
While we mentioned that Cades Coves is a specific area where you can see local wildlife, we would be remiss if we did not discuss the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as a whole. This national park is what gives the area its life. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park features an abundance of local wildlife and vegetation that are allowed to thrive. In fact, the park is a natural black bear habitat where you are almost guaranteed to see one out in the open. There are approximately 1,500 black bears that currently live in the park. Current laws require all visitors remain at least 50 yards away from them. Elk and deer are other wildlife that continue to flourish. Elk almost went extinct on the East Coast back in the 1880s. However, in 2001, elk were reintroduced to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and have continued to thrive. You will notice that over 100 varieties of trees and wildflowers can easily hide the elk and deer from predators. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park continues to play an important role on the local habitat making it the perfect natural attraction to visit during your stay.
