Memorial Day in Gatlinburg
Memorial Day Weekend kicks off the spring season in the Gateway to the Smokies. You will find everything from hiking and rafting to art galleries and musical theater in town. You can go to Rowdy Bear Mountain and take a ride on the world’s first mountain glider or see who can outdraw who at the Shoot ‘em Up Cinema a 7D theater.
The Battle of Burg Hill took place right here in Gatlinburg during the Civil War. Only about 20% of the people in Sevier County wanted to secede from the Union. Unfortunately, Tennessee did secede, and the Confederates occupied Gatlinburg until December of 1863. The Union Army came in to save the day. The battle only took about an hour on the day of December 20th, 1863 and freed the town from the Confederacy’s forces. You can visit Burg Hill on Memorial Day and honor the great soldiers who defeated the United States’ enemies in this battle.
If you wish to pay tribute to fallen soldiers, there are 60 cemeteries in the area where you may leave flowers. If motorcycles are your thing, you can join The Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride. Bikers from all over the region come to honor fallen soldiers.
Family Fest
You can enjoy the majesty of the Smokies as you listen to some fabulous music on Memorial Day Weekend at the Family Fest. There are worship services during the day and a concert every night. Each year features different guests. 2021’s concert features famed gospel singers Bill and Gloria Gaither, Mark Lowry, and Charlotte Richie. Speakers include teaching minister Kyle Idleman, who preaches gratitude to his followers. Former atheist turned Christian Lee Stroble will speak about his transformation at the festival.
