You’ve probably come to Gatlinburg for the Great Smoky Mountains. These gently rolling mountains covered in fog have been intriguing and inspiring everyone who gazes upon them for hundreds of years. In the distance, the mountains appear in layers of various shades of blue and purple, and can be almost magical at times. From mid-September through early November, when the leaves change color, these mountains light up in bold gold and amber, bright yellow and radiant reds. It’s breathtaking: see them from one of our fall cabin rentals in Tennessee Gatlinburg.

Enjoying Fall Foliage in Gatlinburg
Fall is the best time to visit Gatlinburg, whether you’re a “leaf-peeper” or not. The weather cools down, and if you stay away from the most popular fall foliage trails, the crowds have thinned out a bit. Plus, area wildlife is pretty active this time of year with migratory birds, deer rutting, and black bears eating everything in sight.
Hike along any of the trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and you’ll be surrounded by red maples, beeches, hickories, scarlet oaks and other hardwoods in full color. Climb to the top of Clingmans Dome’s Observation Tower, one of the highest points in the park, and enjoy a panoramic view of the Smokies. Cades Cove is a popular hike, especially during peak foliage season, as is the nearby Rich Mountain Loop which heads up nearly 3,700 feet on Rich’s Mountain Cerulean Knob. It’s worth the 8.5 mile trip! Not ready for that long a hike? The Cove Hardwood Nature Trail is short, just under a mile, and is known for seasonal wildflowers and fall colors. Hike through colorful foliage on the trail to Laurel Falls, a popular hike (less than 3 miles round trip) to a two-tiered cascading waterfall.
The secret to viewing the foliage in all its splendor, is getting up high. And that’s easy when you take the Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway or the Gatlinburg SkyLift. And, once you get to the end of the SkyLift, you’ll be able to enjoy views up and down the valley from the SkyBridge too.
Of course, you can enjoy traipsing up and down the colorful mountain forest trails to view the foliage, or you can the beautiful scenery from the comfort of your cabin rentals in Tennessee Gatlinburg. Spacious patios and balconies offer delightful spots for entertaining, dining al fresco or just relaxing as you enjoy that view. Many of our cabins feature private bedroom balconies, so you can enjoy your first cup of coffee while you watch the sun bring the mountains alive.
