We are all looking forward to leaving 2020 in the rear-view mirror and looking ahead to 2021. Look no further than Gatlinburg for your New Year’s festivities as our vacation destination features exciting events and activities that will help bring in the new year with style and excitement. Enjoy New Year’s Eve in Gatlinburg!

Gatlinburg New Year’s Eve Ball Drop & Fireworks

While many events around the country have been cancelled, Gatlinburg has one of the few New Year’s Eve events still being planned. The New Year’s Eve Ball Drop & Fireworks is scheduled to take place on December 31st where you can celebrate the holiday with others in the area. The event takes place at the intersection of Parkway and Historic Nature Trail, where you can get a clear view of the Space Needle. This 400-foot-tall building has the ball and countdown so you can see exactly when 2021 hits. The fireworks show is choreographed with special music and rhythmic LED lights for a one-of-a-kind display. Please do not forget your masks, as thousands of individuals attend this popular event.

Enjoy the Hiking Trails

Gatlinburg is located in the Smoky Mountains where you can find picturesque trails on which to hike. The summer and fall seasons are extremely popular for travelers and the trails will often busy. However, the winter season sees less individuals active on the trails, allowing you to enjoy some space. We recommend the Old Sugarlands Trail found just 5 minutes outside of town. For a variety of trails of all experience levels, look into the Twin Creeks Trail. Since it is winter and there will be snow, we recommend dressing warm for you hikes in the area!

Take a Winery Tour

You can stay warm by indulging yourself in locally produced wines from local wineries. Many tour companies provide winery tours that will take you to several different destinations without you having to worry about driving. Grab a bottle or two and take them back to your vacation rental to relax!

Embrace the Holiday Spirit in the Great Smoky Mountains

The holiday season kicks off right in Gatlinburg with plenty of Thanksgiving festivities to get you in the spirit of the season. Spend your mornings on a scenery filled walk or nearby hike, such as the Grotto Falls Trail, and pay a visit to the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Thanksgiving Show in the afternoon. At this annual craft show, you can browse a variety of goods from local artists, such as beautiful quilts and hand-woven baskets—it’s a terrific place to pick up some gifts for the holidays, or a unique souvenir of your own!

Endless Choices for Holiday Dining and Winter Recreation

If you don’t feel like cooking in your fully-equipped rental and would rather spend the holiday in full relaxation mode, there’s an impressive number of restaurants in town offering both Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner, such as the holiday buffet at Seasons of Ober Loft & Lounge and the Ober Gatlinburg ski resort. It’s a great excuse to hit the slopes before your holiday feast, and if it’s too early for skiing, their snow-tubing always opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving! As a bonus, you can ride the Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway to the resort from town, an enjoy stunningly gorgeous scenery as you float above the Smoky Mountains.

A Wide Variety of Seasonal Events

Whether you’re here for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s, you can take a ride on the spectacular Gatlinburg Trolley Ride of Lights, a fantastic trolley ride that takes you through downtown on a magical journey amongst one-of-a-kind light displays. Other events during Gatlinburg holidays include the Winter Smoky Mountain Tunes and Tales, where characters and storytellers fill the streets of downtown and carol to a mixture of Appalachian and bluegrass tunes. And Gatlinburg’s New Year’s celebration is quite grand, with a fireworks show over the iconic Gatlinburg Space Needle, live entertainment, and festive downtown streets.

Thanksgiving in Gatlinburg is for Family

Although we appreciate our families on a daily basis, on Thanksgiving those feelings of gratitude and love grow in strength and spending as much time as possible with them becomes a priority, and nowhere is that more evident than in Gatlinburg. The majority of tourists have returned to their homes and this is the time to experience what it is like to live in town. Start the morning with a hike through the woods, return in time to catch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on television or in our home theater, and end the day with leftover pumpkin pie in front of the roaring fire in your Thanksgiving cabin rental feeling pleasantly full, slightly tired, and extremely happy that you have a few more days to spend with your family to make this holiday one you won’t soon forget.

Thanksgiving is All About the Feast

We love to eat, and this holiday, more than any other, is all about the food—something for which we could not be more grateful! Savory turkey and dressing, sweet cranberry accompaniments, and desserts that will mostly be responsible for the extra 10 pounds the season adds to our bodies. This is what we love, and when you’re enjoying Thanksgiving in Gatlinburg, it’s something you will enjoy to the fullest!

Create a big feast yourself in our well-appointed kitchen, order a meal already prepared from Publix, catered, or simply pop by any of the restaurants that are open and let someone else do the prep, cooking, and clean-up. Seasons of Ober in Ober Gatlinburg or the Park Grill are two of our favorite places to feast during the holidays. Reservations may be needed, so start looking online a few weeks before your trip.

Thanksgiving is the Jumping Off Point for Christmas

Even though we don’t like to admit it, as soon as the table is cleared it’s officially the Christmas season, and many Black Friday sales begin at midnight. Spend some time snatching up bargains in downtown Gatlinburg, at Tanger Outlets, or if you want to offer more thoughtful gifts for your family, head over to the Great Smoky Thanksgiving Arts & Craft Show held at the Gatlinburg Convention Center and explore the aisles of handmade treats and goodies. Winter Smoky Mountain Tunes and Tales begins on November 29th and is held on Friday and Saturday nights through December 22nd and offers caroling in the streets, stories told, and characters dressed in Christmas costumes mingling with the shoppers.

A Gatlinburg cabin is the perfect place for Christmas, with toasty fireplaces and frost on the rooftops. For even more holiday cheer though, head out to some of these exciting Gatlinburg Christmas events that herald the coming of Christmas and the New Year:

Ski Season Begins!

Ober Gatlinburg is the city’s own amusement park—and it becomes all the more fun when the temperatures drop and snow starts to fall! Doubling as a ski resort, Ober Gatlinburg is the most popular place for winter sports, including snow tubing, skiing, and snowboarding. Mid-December marks the beginning of ski season, so why not buy yourself a present—maybe some lessons or a new pair of goggles?

Winterfest as Pigeon Forge

For one of the most fascinating Gatlinburg Christmas events, head over to Pigeon Forge to enjoy Winterfest, a light show that brings in over 5 million lights to create a winter wonderland for guests from across the region. However, Winterfest is more than just the lights—it also includes all the other ways that Pigeon Forge goes all-out for the holidays, including Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede’s holiday shows. Pigeon Forge is just 20 to 30 minutes away from Gatlinburg, so stop on by!

Smoky Mountains Tunes and Tales

In December, each Friday and Saturday evening before the 25th brings out talented performers for Smoky Mountain Tunes and Tales. Singers and more, they bring out the holiday spirit with festive music and local tales. Head to the downtown Parkway and stroll along to hear their country-inspired takes on old favorites, and stop by a raconteur long enough for a laugh and a small lesson.

Gatlinburg Ball Drop and Fireworks Show

If you’re in town for Christmas, you may as well stay for New Year’s! The safest place in the mountains for a fun-filled fireworks bonanza is at the Space Needle—around 50,000 spectators are expected, so it will be quite the party! The party is free and entertainment will be there. There’s nothing like standing shoulder to shoulder with strangers as the crisp night sky is illuminated with bangs and bursts as everyone heads into 2018.
