More Information on This Gorgeous Gatlinburg Attraction
Little Pigeon River consists of three tributaries: The East, West, and Middle Prongs. There are several excellent swimming holes located in the Middle and West Prongs, such as the Greenbrier swimming holes and the Townsend Y swimming area. The banks of the Little Pigeon River outside of Dollywood are also a popular place to swim and float the day away.
The West Prong of Little Pigeon River is also known for its proximity to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Here, you’ll find historic sites like The Old Mill, where Pigeon Forge’s namesake forge was once located and operated. The site now holds not only the historic mill, but two restaurants and a number of shops for toys, candy, and pottery. Patriot Park is also adjacent to the mill and includes a pleasant walking trail that travels along Little Pigeon River and the mill.
Another popular activity on Little Pigeon River is fishing—particularly fly fishing, with both wet and dry flies. In this river, you’ll find fish species like trout and bass, with trout being the most popular and abundant type of catch. The stream is stocked with rainbow trout, while occasionally wild brook trout can also be spotted. Panfish are also found in the river.
The portion of Little Pigeon River’s West Prong that borders Pigeon Forge is also a go-to destination for whitewater rafting, as it is a Whitewater Class II classification. Companies like Rafting in the Smokies can provide equipment and guided whitewater rafting sessions on the river on tours ranging from a simple one hour ride to a full-day excursion. The river experiences surges of swiftly-moving water due to the water releases from the nearby dam, which generally occur on Tuesday through Thursday and on Saturdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Tubing on Little Pigeon River is a great alternative to whitewater rafting or kayaking for individuals who lack the experience or simply don’t want to put in much effort while enjoying the water and scenery of the river. Try companies like River Romp for your tubing needs, including tube rentals and shuttle busses to the best floating points.
