The History of a Town in the Great Smoky Wilderness
The history of this gorgeous area goes back to when it was a spiritual place for Native American tribes. Actually, the US-441 follows the long path that Native Americans took between here and North Carolina. In the 1700s, this was a very common place to set up camp for hunters and fur trappers. It was not until the late 18th century when William Ogle built a log cabin for him and his family with the help of the Cherokee people. After that, many veterans of the Revolutionary War were compensated with plots of land here for service in the war. In the late 19th century, there was a logging boom in the area until the Great Smoky Mountain National Forest was born in 1911, along with many other parks across the country.
