Things to Know Before Rafting in Gatlinburg

There are a number of rafting charter companies out there who are ready to assist you on your river adventure. Before you reserve your rafting in Gatlinburg trip along the river, however, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve packed the necessary supplies. Rafting gear and transportation for said gear will often come included with any rafting package deals that you purchase, but you’ll need to bring a change of clothes, a towel, a quick-drying swimsuit or pair of shorts, and shoes that will stay on your feet, such as sports sandals, water shoes, or tennis shoes (not flip-flops).

Rafting hours from charter services such as Smoky Mountain River Rat will often depend on the season. You’ll want to make a reservation, especially during what is considered “pre-season,” during March and April. Throughout May, Smoky Mountain River Rat has afternoon water release trips on Tuesday through Thursday. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, they embark on river rafting trips on Tuesday through Thursday and on Saturdays. Options for non-release trips are also available when you call to reserve your rafting trip.

Rafting in Gatlinburg on the picturesque upper portion of Pigeon River, a popular rafting destination, will take around two hours, and can cost about $50. For more extreme thrills, you can raft on the most challenging part of the river for about $60. There is a minimum age requirement of eight years on these trips, due to the demanding physical nature of them.

If you’re looking for something a little more sedate, rafting on the lower section of Pigeon River will take about two and a half hours and will cost around $50. This trip is fit for rafters as young as three years old.

Or if you want to make a day of it, there are package options for rafting down both the upper and lower portions of the river, which usually lasts about four to five hours with a break. This package will cost approximately $90 or so.
